Madalla blast: Detained suspect escapes

A man arrested at the Borno State Governor’s Lodge over the deadly Madalla Christmas Day bombing allegedly escaped from police custody on Sunday while he was being conveyed to a location in Abaji area of Abuja,
Boko Haram suspect Kabiru Sokoto was arrested at the weekend during a police raid on the lodge, where he sneaked in through a friend who was given accommodation to stay overnight. He was said to be taken along with a Flight Lieutenant of the Nigerian Air Force to the Zone 7 Headquarters of the Police in Abuja.

Sources told Daily Trust yesterday that Kabiru was taken to Abaji on Sunday, where he is said to own a house, to allow police conduct search. But he escaped at about 5.30pm at Abaji.
Police went on a pursuit, firing shot and in the process a stray bullet hit and killed a 28-year-old man named Awwal Inuwa Ashafa, according to residents of the area.

Pandemonium ensued as people run for cover. Ashafa, who had an HND in Building Engineering from Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, was shot in the chest.
A witness said trouble started in the area when policemen from Abuja city brought Kabiru Sokoto in a Toyota Hilux van. A gang of youths flagged down the vehicle as it was heading for the Ona of Abaji’s Palace, creating a chaos during which the suspect escaped.
The police had earlier taken the suspect to a house he owned at Abaji to conduct search and were on their way to the traditional head’s palace when the youths saw him in handcuffs and then blocked the road, the witness said.
Kabiru seized the opportunity created by the youths and escaped. Meanwhile, the police fired shots in the air to disperse the youths, but one of the bullets hit a young man.
Our reporter, observed soldiers, riot police and men of the FCT Special Anti-Robbery Squad positioned at various junctions in Abaji, while a police armoured vehicle was also seen stationed in the town.
Abaji DPO, Superintendent Mathew Chukwkuma Okafor, was not available for comments. A senior police officer said four persons have been arrested over the incident.
But spokesman for the FCT police command Moshood Jimoh said no suspect escaped custody from either the Abaji divisional police or from any other police unit there.

  1. THE STORY BEHIND THE ESCAPE OF KABIRU SOKOTO A SUSPECTED BOKO HARAM LEADER IS A BIG LIE BUT A CALCULATED ATTEMPT BY THE POLICE TO UNDERMINE THE SECURITY OF THE NATION. IT IS TREASON AND THE INSPECTOR OF POLICE MUST BE PROSECUTED IF HE CAN NOT DELIVER THE POLICE MEN THAT RELEASED HIM.

  2. THE POLICE HAVE DONE IT AGAIN. I AM SURE MONEY HAVE CHANGED HANDS. BORNO STATE GOVERNOR MUST BE MADE TO FACE NIGERIANS FOR EXPLANATION WHY WE SHOULD NOT CONCLUDE HE IS THE MAJOR SPONSOR OF BOKO HARAM AND THE SERVING SOLDIER WHO WAS WITH KABIRU MUST BE EXPOSED AND THE POLICE MEN WHO RELEASED HIM MUST BE BROUGHT TO BOOK.

  10. All this goes to show the selected justice being meted out to us.Up to now no one was ever arrested for all the killings in Jos Plateau State, and Governor Jonah Jang is globe trotting like a US foreign diplomat, but some people are calling for the head of the Borno State Governor over the Boko Haram issue. How do you expect Nigerians to trust their leaders? Some of the comments made only portray us as strange bedfellows trying to stay together. We only shout when one of our own is affected.

  14. Honestly we still av a long way to go in this country Nigeria. How can someone who was tightly with handcorp escaped from police hand, How manage that could be possible. To be very candid this is a plan work btween police and the so call Borno Governor. I recommends that a correct board should be convened to investigate the circumstances surrounded the escape of the suspected Boko Haram Leader Kabiro Sokoto and anybody found guilty should be made to face the law. Nigerian Police is a disgrace to this nation Nigeria. Shame of Nigeria police and the so call inspector general of police the country said she have.

  15. Lets take a good look at this issue, is there any iota of truth in that story? How can they convince us that a high-profile suspect of that magnitude is been carried in an open Toyota Hilux to a place where he is resident and probably have recruitees not to talk of sympathisers. Hafiz Ringim you are too smart for that look for a smart lie that we can believe and not this tale by moonlight story.
