Rufai Promises Improved Welfare

The Federal Government has said it is committed to the welfare of the academics as well as the provision of basic teaching and learning facilities at all sectors of the tertiary education.
It also called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resort to dialogue with government and called off the strike in the interest of the nation as well as students.

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, who disclosed this at the weekend, at  the 19th Convocation ceremony of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, noted that government was determined to ensure that the youths of this country are given quality education that would afford them decent livelihood, and enhance their ability to contribute effectively to nation building.
Rufa’I, who further promised that in order to address the problem of obsolete equipment, government was currently engaged in the acquisition of laboratory and other teaching equipment for higher institutions, disclosed that recently, some polytechnics and universities have taken delivery of their consignments, while other would have theirs in due course.
She identified poor students’ performance in school certificate examination, decaying infrastructure, outdated equipment, inadequate funding, cultism and lack of commitment of teachers as causes of worry to the federal government, adding that they constitute the several challenges currently face in the education system.
Commending the management of Auchi Polytechnic for boosting the internally generated revenue of the school through its Polyventures, the minister urged the management to think of more innovative ways to further improve on its IGR as government alone cannot provide all the funds for education.
Earlier in her address, the Rector, Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Dr. Philipa Odogho, had said since the foundation of the institution, it had established a good reputation among its peers, adding that in the has three years, management of the school has put in place policies aimed at distinguishing the school.
According to her, at the poly expo in Kano in 2008, the Polytechnic took the first prize and that further to this development, the school has begun construction of a new lecture threatre with a sitting capacity for 100 persons, construction of a block of 12 classrooms storey building, construction of a block of four classrooms and 12 offices, and construction of East and West entrance gate at the new campus among others.
She also disclosed that the polytechnic graduated a total of 6,535 students in both National Diploma [ND] and Higher National Diploma (HND) out of which 68 passed with distinction at the ND level, while 50 had distinction at the HND level.
Highlight of the occasion was the conferment of following to four distinguish Nigerians namely, Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; former Chief Judge of Edo State and chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Constance Momoh; Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr. Mas’Udu Adamu Kazaure; and former Education Secretary, Prof. Abraham Imogie.
