States not bound to domesticate FoI law – Lagos AG

As Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State present the year 2012 budget estimates to the state House of Assembly today, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeola Ipaye, has said states have the power to enact their own Freedom of Information (FoI) Llw, noting that states were not bound to domesticate the federal FoI law.
Ipaye, spoke at the LTV Annual Lecture, weekend, adding that though the law is on the concurrent list, the scope was different between the states and Federal Government, stressing that both tiers of government were allowed to fashion the laws as appropriate.

Noting that laws would not solve all problems, he said the success of any law depended on the environment, attitude and orientation of the people involved.
Ipaye, said that Lagos FoI Act, which was already being fine-tuned by the state Assembly would be more robust and acceptable to the people.
Speaking at the event, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Raji said the FoI Law was important because government must be accountable to the people, adding that even the rural people should be educated on their rights regarding the FoI Act.
