The Borno State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the arrest and interrogation of the former governor of the state, Alhaji Ali Modu-Sheriff. The call comes barely three days after the arrest and arraignment of Senator Ali Ndume, a member of the PDP, on charges of links with Boko Haram

Also, the party has condemned comments by leaders of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) that Senator Ndume and the party are accomplices in the violent attacks by Boko Haram.

According to a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Prof. Ahmed Alkali, “PDP wishes to express its profound disappointment with statements credited to Mr. Yinka Odumakin, speaking on behalf of General Muhammadu Buhari, erstwhile presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in which he attempted to cast aspersion on the PDP over the recent arrest of Senator Ndume.”

According to PDP, “The remarks are not only immature and irresponsible but also a vain attempt to draw political capital by a party that is enmeshed in deep political crisis. The sweeping accusation against the PDP which have been the biggest victims of the crisis shows the insensitivity of Mr. Odumakin to the plight of the people who daily live in fear and uncertainty due to the complex security situation in many parts of the country.

“PDP shall not join issues with any failed political association in playing politics with the lives of the People. We remain firmly resolved to assist the security agencies to unravel the mysteries behind this crisis and will not therefore engage ourselves in making statements capable of jeopardizing investigations by our security agencies.

Meanwhile, two of the six suspected members of Boko-Haram sect currently standing trial before Justice Bilikisu Aliyu of the Federal High Court, in Abuja, have denied statements presented in evidence against them.

The six accused Shuaibu Abubakar, Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana, Mohammed Ali, Musa Adam and Umar Ibrahim are standing trial over allegations that they conspired to plant and detonate explosives at different places which caused grievous bodily harm and killed about 22 peoples at different places.

They are said to be the brains behind the bombing of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s office in Suleja, Niger State, on the eve of the National Assembly elections last April which claimed lives of about 16 people.

All the suspects have pleaded not guilty to a five count charge of criminal conspiracy and voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means slammed against them by the State Security Service (SSS).

The suspects are to be remanded in the custody of the Department of State Security till December 9 when the application for bail would be argued.

Also, reacting to the arrest of Senator Ndume, a chieftain of the Borno State chapter of PDP and former House of Representatives Minority Leader, Mohamed Kumalia, said the real sponsors of Boko Haram will be unmasked once the former governor is arrested.

“Look, I was once attacked, unless the former governor is arrested and interrogated, the truth of the sponsors of this group will never come to light. Look at how they are maligning people even late Ambassador Pinda who served this country in the National Intelligence Agency for 32 years. You can imagine what is happening, because he is no longer alive,” Kumalia said.

He condemned the handling of the case by the SSS and accused the security outfit of bias. “Assuming, without conceding, that what Konduga said was true, why have they (SSS) not deemed it expedient to invite or arrest former governor Ali Modu Sheriff? After all, his name was mentioned severally by Konduga and even the spokesperson of SSS. He has been walking the streets a free man is he untouchable?”
