The
management of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has given
the sum of N2.48m to 24 personnel of the authority who suffered physical
attack, accident or illness while performing their duty.
Giving
out the money to the beneficiaries at the LASTMA’s Oshodi office,
Lagos, the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Young Arabamen, a
retired commissioner of police, said the gesture underscored the
seriousness the state government had for the welfare of its personnel.
He
said, “You are doing a risky job. Some of you suffered fractured legs,
broken limbs, but those ones are still better than those in the grave.
The state government is ready to protect and provide for your welfare.”
Arabamen,
who noted that law enforcement agents were exposed to attacks from
those who would want to go against the law, cautioned his men to always
be on the side of the law, so that the authority would rise in their
support in such situations.
He
added, “We have to learn in our job that you don’t run contrary to the
principles of the job. Do your job conscientiously and the state is
there to protect you.”
While
he stressed that LASTMA personnel’s job could be likened to that of
those in the warfront, because they work in the rain and under the
scorching sun, to keep traffic moving, he explained that the
compensation was from the insurance scheme obtained for them.
One
of the beneficiaries, Mr. Babatunde Balogun, who had his right leg
fractured by a trailer said he spent six months in the hospital after
the incident.
Balogun,
who still limps said, “It was a reckless driver that knocked me down
with his trailer. I was on the patrol motorcycle around Ashade market in
Ikeja, when suddenly the driver swerved to my side. I passed out
immediately.”
Arabamen
advised motorists to observe traffic rules as safety should be an
everyday maxim and not observed during festive periods only.
