Mr. George Onah, escaped death by the whiskers yesterday, when
daredevil armed robbers fired several shots into his car while driving
out of his premises, as they attacked a Hilux van, killing a Mobile
Police escort and the driver of the van.
It was gathered the robbers made away with about N28 million. Some of
the robbers were dressed in Mobile Police and military uniforms.
Onah had tried to drive into Ikwerre Road when, unknown to him, the
robbers had surrounded a commercial bank, waiting for the van with
number plate 758 ONG (a foreign number) conveying cash. The robbers
apparently thought that Onah wanted to block their get away car and so
decided to demobilise him.
However, the journalist laid flat in his car as the trigger happy
robbers peppered his car with bullets. They then raided the van and
carted away the money that was in the trunk.
The commercial bank and Vanguard Newspaper premises are situated
about 200 metres away from the Police Station and directly opposite Mile
1 Market (Rumuwoji).
Commercial activities and traffic were disrupted as bullets flew in
different directions, forcing traders and pedestrians to scamper for
safety.
However, Policemen from the Mile 1 Police headquarters later arrived
at the scene to remove the corpses of the policeman and driver of the
van.
When contacted, state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Suleman Abbah, said
force spokesperson, Mr. Ben Uguegbulam would get back to the press when
“detailed information on the matter was received.”
Police later cordoned the area with an armoured personnel carrier, APC
