Intrigues and drama continue to foreshadow the November 19 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in Bayelsa State as the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commis-sion (NDDC), Mr. Timi Alaibe, has returned to the party.

He has applied for a waiver to enable him contest in the governorship primary election of the PDP, finally defecting from the Labour Party (LP).

This is coming as PDP has also rescheduled the delegates election earlier scheduled for Wednesday to Thursday.

Also, the party has placed on hold the appointment of Chief James Togo as acting chairman in Bayelsa pending the state congress election next year.

Togo is the chairman of the senatorial district where the former chairman, Rufus Agbakime, hails from.

The party, through a letter from the National Secretary, Dr. Musa Babayo, asked the Bayelsa State stakeholders to appoint a new acting chairman and return Chief Darius Obieme to his substantive position as state vice-chairman of the party.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party had summoned Governor Timi Sylva to its meeting to intimate him of the decision reached, but the governor who arrived at about 1.30pm Wednesday  stormed out of the meeting within 30 minutes.

THISDAY gathered that Sylva, who was uncomfortable with the decision to remove Obieme, left the meeting when he was unable to persuade the NWC to reverse the decision to make Togo the new acting chairman.

THISDAY gathered that Alaibe had on September 10 this year written a letter titled “Request for waiver to Contest for Office under the Platform of the PDP” to his Kolokuma/Opukuma Local Government chapter of the party in the state.

The application was granted, but was turned down by the state executive committee led by Obieme.

However, upon the intervention of stakeholders in the state, Alaibe appealed to the Zonal Working Committee under the National Vice-Chairman of the South-south, Chief Okon Mkpubre, and the zone granted the waiver.

The waiver would be deliberated upon by the NWC of the PDP on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) next week.

But the acting National Chairman of PDP, Abubakar Baraje, was directed by the NWC to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan on the matter for final clarification.
Baraje is expected to meet the president between now and Saturday and brief the NWC on the outcome of the meeting.

THISDAY gathered that the decision for waiver to Alaibe may not be unconnected to the meeting between senior Presidency officials and Baraje with Mkpubre in attendance.

In his application for a waiver, Alaibe said: “I make this request in strict compliance with article iii of the PDP constitution which makes provision for a new entrant (or returnee) to the party to seek for waiver through the state chapter of the party. I am also conscious of the fact that such waiver could be granted by the party’s NWC on the recommendation of the party’s NWC.

“I urge you to give my request kind and expeditious consideration given my past sacrifice for the party and my genuine determination to help rebuild the PDP in my home state, Bayelsa and ensure that the party wins the forthcoming gubernatorial election.”

THISDAY gathered that with the entrance of Alaibe into the governorship race on the platform of PDP, pressures are intense on Hon. Henry Dickson to withdraw from the race and allow Alaibe to become the consensus governorship candidate of the state.

Meanwhile, a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Prof. Ahmed Alkali, said the ward congresses for the election of three ad hoc delegates for the gubernatorial primaries in Adamawa State earlier scheduled for yesterday have now been shifted to Thursday.

This postponement was attributed to “emerging logistic challenges”.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has confirmed that he would work for the re-election campaign bid of Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State.
