Normal activities return to Jos after crisis

Economic and social activities are gradually picking up in Jos, the Plateau State capital, following last Monday’s mayhem which crippled activities, a survey by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, has revealed.
Businesses were paralysed in some parts of the city on Monday, especially Kabong, in Jos North where some people lost their lives and means of livelihood.

A correspondent of NAN, who visited the Terminus area, the economic hub of Jos, reported that unlike the past two days when shops were locked, such business concerns were opened to prospective customers.
A common phenomenon noticed among shop owners was that not all the doors leading into the shops were flung open, as was the case in peaceful times.
A shop owner on Ahmadu Bello Way, Chike Okafor told NAN that he opened his doors to the public after he noticed the presence of security personnel in the area. Mr Okafor said that it would be fool-hardy to open shop without adequate security.
Another shop owner, Elizabeth Milford said that since she was forced to close abruptly last Monday, the presence of security men gave her the courage to reopen.
“Security is paramount in all human endeavour and government must be alive to this responsibility, especially now that security is an international concern,” she added.
According to her, shop owners are targets of protesters and appealed to government to put maximum security in place to safeguard their businesses.
Meanwhile, so many banks remained closed for a greater part of the day, in apparent fear. Banks did not observe the usual opening time and customers who had besieged their premises could not gain entry.
The main branch of the First Bank Plc eventually opened at about 11am, but customers were made to enter through the rear gate while the main gate remained shut.
Other banks did not open entirely as only customers with Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards could withdraw cash.
The number of customers at the banks was unprecedented because Tuesday and Wednesday were declared public holidays.
