The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration will within two weeks provide a temporary office accommodation to all the United Nations agencies displaced as a result of last week’s bomb attack.
Bala Mohammed, FCT minister disclosed this while receiving the United Nations African representative that paid him a thank-you visit in his office in Abuja.
The minister praised the United Nations “for being able to carry on with all its humanitarian work in the country despite the effect of the sad event that occurred.”
Mr Mohammed reiterated that “the temporary office will surely be temporary in nature because the reconstruction or rehabilitation of the devastated common office will be effected immediately”.
He, therefore, directed the coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Reuben Okoya to call on Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to immediately conduct an integrity test on the entire structure.
The minister assured that the United Nations must not be abandoned at this difficult period.
Also speaking at the occasion, Olajumoke Akinjide, the FCT minister of state, commended the UN for the good work it has been doing even at this trying moment; promising that the FCT administration will not let the organisation down at this time of need.
Daoudu Toure, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, who spoke on behalf of the delegation, said that they were in the FCT administration to appreciate the role played by the administration since the unfortunate incident last week.
Mr Toure remarked that the United Nations system is currently using Transcorp Hilton Hotel but urgently needs alternative office accommodation outside the hotel considering the cost and convenience.
He disclosed that even at this trying time, the UN is assisting to deal with cholera outbreak in Oyo State as a result of the torrential flood there.
