Labour faults Minister over sack of 4 PHCN CEOs

LAGOS— ORGANISED Labour in the nation’s Power sector, yesterday, dismissed reasons of incompetence and non-performance, given for the sack of four Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, chief executive officers, saying they were victimized by the Minister as “perceived enemies.”
Under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, organised labour argued that available records in the PHCN, clearly showed that the competence and performance of the affected CEOs were not in doubt as their respective distribution zones had been excelling in terms of cash collection.

NUEE in a statement by its General Secretary, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said: “We are sure that the Ministry knows that incompetence and non-performance which was cited as reasons behind their action is false. The sack is but a vindictive action against their ‘perceived enemies’.

“Available records in PHCN clearly show that the competence and performance of the affected CEOs are not in doubt as their respective distribution zones have been excelling in terms of cash collection. It is on record that we complemented their efforts in giving motivational talks to workers in the various locations since our visit to these zones: Benin Zone moved from N800 million to about N1.2 billion and Ibadan Zone moved from N850 million to over N1 billion amongst others.”

“Just last week, the Minister met with the CEOs and charged them to increase their service delivery while the CEOs gave their assurances. It is therefore amusing to hear the sack of some of them few days later. The pertinent question is what kind of assessments was done within few days that justify the Ministry’s action which is largely believed to be a preconceived plan? How can it be explained that a Ministry that has not appraised the CEOs for the past six months would come up with such fallacy?

A sensitive sector like Power cannot be run based on sentiments because of negative consequences that may generate from such skewed actions.  From all intent and purposes, the sack of the CEOs is a violation of all labour laws as the cited reasons are frivolous and untenable. One of them would even reach the mandatory retirement age by November, 2011.”

The Ministry should know that they are only playing to the gallery by this action ostensibly to impress Mr. President and the unsuspecting public. Will their sack increase our generation capacity which is the monumental problem confronting our nation today?

We cannot but recount the note of warning sounded by the Chief Negotiator/Conciliator Comrade Hassan Sumonu in Ghana that both sides should refrain from action(s) that are capable of threatening industrial peace while the negotiation lasts. Since Government has flagrantly violated this, we hope Nigerians will show understanding in the event of our reaction towards protecting the inalienable rights of our members and the PHCN’s workforce at large.”
