ABUJA—Following the tension and uncertainty generated by the purported interception of 700 explosives by soldiers attached to Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army two weeks ago at the city gate Abuja, and clarification by the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, that they were dynamite explosives used for blasting of rocks at construction sites, the IGP yesterday met with manufacturers and distributors.
At the meeting the IG spelt out new modalities for the purchase and movement of such explosives.
It will be recalled that following the hullabaloo created by the interception, the Inspector General of Police placed an embargo on the movement and sale of dynamites and directed that except an approval was obtained from his office, no such explosives should be procured and transported.
The meeting which was held behind closed doors and presided over by the Inspector General of Police himself, had in attendance, Chairman of the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Joseph Makoju and other explosive importers, while the IGP, Ringim, DIG Operations, Audu Abubakar and the Commissioner of Police, Bomb Disposal Unit, Ambrose Aisabor were on the side of the police.
Vanguard gathered that modern modalities of importation and packaging of explosives were suggested in view of the security challenges currently facing the country while proper methods of transporting the explosives so as to prevent its endangering lives and property were discussed.
Mr. Ringim had while reacting to the concern generated by the interception, repeatedly said the importation and manufacturing of such explosives will be banned because most construction company will fold up, while a large number of Nigerians will be thrown into the labour market.
