LAGOS — Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, weekend, identified healthcare financing, revitalisation of primary healthcare system, behavioural change/public health education, and qualitative health care delivery as the four primary areas of focus in the state health sector in the next four years.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos, he said the focus was in addition to the strategies government had earlier adopted in the last four years, which include infrastructural development, human resource, health care financing, primary health care, enforcement of regulations, and preventive strategies.
According to him, “The health sector’s performance has been guided by the noble goal that every Lagosian enjoys unfettered access to qualitative healthcare without significant geographical, financial, cultural or political barriers, this is our service charter and we are more than committed to its attainment.”
On financing, he said the government would address concerns raised, adding that the sector continues to seek for serious minded investors, who will utilise the state’s challenges as opportunities for a mutually rewarding business since government alone cannot provide the resources to meet all the needs of the health sector.
He said, “Most countries of the world have instituted structures to cushion the effect of outright out-of-pocket payment for health care services and this is what brought about the health insurance scheme.
To meet our own peculiar problems through a firm understanding of the distinctive features of our population and economy, we designed the Community Based Health Insurance Scheme, CBHIS, model within the larger state Health Insurance Scheme framework,” he said.
