Govt warns of radioactive vehicles, rice from Asia

The Federal Government on Sunday warned Nigerians to beware of the importation of contaminated items from Asian countries.

The warning was contained in a statement from the Consumer Protection Council.

It said the items, which could be contaminated radioactive goods, might be sent in form of support or assistance to faith-based institutions and non-governmental organisations.

Some of the items, according to the statement, are vehicles, rice and vegetables.

The statement, which was signed by the Deputy Director, Public Relations, Mr. Abiodun Obimuyiwa, warned NGOs to always ascertain the quality of such materials from technically equipped government agencies before putting them into use.

The statement added that already, the council had informed relevant organisations, especially those that regularly received aid for their operations about the danger.

It said, “The CPC has warned Nigerians to beware of impending shipment of contaminated radioactive goods from Asian countries into the country in form of support or assistance.

“Though government is taking proactive steps to prevent such shipment from entering the shores of the country, Nigerians are, however, cautioned to be more alert.”

It added, “The contaminated radioactive goods include items such as vehicles, rice and vegetables, among others.

Meanwhile, the Council has already communicated this information to relevant organisations, especially those that regularly receive aid for their operations.”
