Flying Eagles coach, John Obuh has told Nigerians who were wowed by the team’s dazzling display in their first match against Guatemala at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup that they should expect a bumper show against Croatia on August 4. The match holds 2am
There is no denying that goals were in short supply over the first two days of Colombia 2011 but all that changed on match day three, with Nigeria plundering five goals without conceding any against Guatemala. Spain also inflicted a heavy defeat on Costa Rica
With Africa’s three other representatives, Cameroon, Mali and Egypt, failing to win in their respective opening matches, it was up to Nigeria to redeem the continent’s pride, which they did in style. They next face Croatia, who lost 2-0 to Saudi Arabia in an early morning match on Thursday.
Reacting to his team’s triumph, an elated Coach Obuh said that he was never in doubt on his team’s ability to beat Guatemala. He also told fifa.com that an improved performance can be expected from the team when two injured players return to battle Croatia.
“”Guatemala are a good side, but with the kind of opportunities we had, we needed to score. My intention was to play with new players since we had two injured in the attack and one in the midfield and luckily for us, three of our defenders who were previously injured had a good game.
“I planned on keeping those changes until the end depending on the players’ situation, but I’m sure that those injured players should be ready for the next match, which is going to be an improvement of what we played against Guatemala”, added Obuh, who coached Nigeria to clinch the silver at the FIFA U-17 World Cup two years back in Abuja.
