The recently sworn-in commissioner for women affairs in Edo State, Inimidun Idehen, has been suspended by the leadership of the Action Congress of Nigeria in Owan West local government area of the state.
A suspension letter signed by all the ward leaders of the party, including Peter Eguaboi (local party chairman) and sent to the state chairman of ACN, accused Mrs Idehen of anti-party activities, including making "unwarranted, distasteful and destructive" comments about the party in the media.
In reaction to the purported suspension, however, Mrs Idehen said those who claimed to have suspended her actually do not have the powers to do so. She also denied the accusation of engaging in any form of anti-party activity, "other than those designed to help promote the growth of the party, Owan West local government area."
But the local party chapter, in its letter, said the decision of the leaders to suspend the commissioner was in tandem with Section 9 (1), (2) ,(3) and (4) of the constitution of the ACN.
The suspension letter was presented to the state secretary of the party when the party leaders from Owan West, led by Mr Eguaboi, stormed the Airport Road secretariat of the party in Benin City in a protest march on Monday.
Mr Eguaboi accused the new commissioner of activities capable of tarnishing the name of the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, and the ACN in Owan West.
He quoted Mrs Idehen, saying, while on a courtesy visit to the paramount ruler of Ozala, that Mr Oshiomhole told her that ACN leaders in Owan West are liars, and that based on her presumed submission to the governor, Mr Oshiomhole gave ordered her to "go and organise Owan West."
"We wondered how the ACN in Owan West could have won the last general elections if it had no credible leaders as claimed by Mrs Idehen," .
"After a review of the activities of the commissioner, as contained in various TV news report and newspaper publications, the party is of the opinion that she is out to work against the interest of the party," Mr Eguaboi said.
