Boko haram : Fg clamps down on illegal foreigners

Indications emergedat the weekend that following iverifiable intelligence reports available to the federal government of the involvement of foreign nationals in the Boko Haram onslaught on innocent Nigerians in the North Eastern part of the country as well as suspected terrorists acts of throwing bombs, security a gencies have commenced the arrest and deportation of illegal foreign nationals resident in the country.

Saturday Vanguard was told that the nationals mostly involved in the Boko Haram crises, many of whom are jobless and have come to see the sect grievances as opportunity to get paid are from Niger Republic, Chad and Sudan and that as at this weekend, over 200 of these nationals have been arrested and deported.

Emphasizing that the action of these security agencies like the SSS, Immigration, Customs, the Police and the military, coupled with the job of the JTF ‘Operation Restore Order’ in Maiduguri, has greatly contributed to the low tempo of attacks from the Boko Haram group, the source said there was no going back until these foreigners who are in their thousands are sent back. Continuing the source said, “The states of Borno,

Adamawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi and Katsina states are the most affected of this foreign invasion and because they don’t have any stake in the Nigerian nation, they are ready to commit any type of havoc provided they will get paid after committing the mayhem.

Saturday Vanguard was further told that many of these foreigners may have been imported into the country by politicians and persons with ulterior destructive motives including the post elections violence that heralded the election of President Goodluck Jonathan because they didn’t want a Southerner winning the election soon after former President Yar’adua’s demise.

In the onslaught to get these illegal foreigners out of the country, some Nigerians have unfortunately fallen victims, Saturday Vanguard was told and this was one of the reasons for the federal government directive on Friday, to the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin to investigate all incidents of military misconduct against law abiding citizens in the country, with a view to brining to book, those that overstepped their bounds in the performance of their duties.

Recall that the minister of Defence, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed had also directed the Defence headquarters to investigate the incident in Biu during which a woman was shot, following the arrest of some Boko Haram suspects.

The action of government, Saturday Vanguard gathered, was apparently meant to avoid the experience of the current devastating riots in London following the killing of a teenager by the British Police.
“Our instructions to officers and men during internal security operations are to arrest all criminals, use minimum force only when necessary and to be tactful with the civilian population”, the minister said.
“As part of our effort to re-position our Armed Forces and to make them more professional, we are looking very carefully at the method of recruitment and vetting to ensure a candidate is identified from his or her local government before being recruited”.

“This will ensure that only credible persons are recruited into the Armed Forces. Let me also stress that the Federal Government is committed to maintaining peace and order and will not allow any miscreant to thwart this effort under whatever guise”.

“We appeal to all elements that have grudges and complaints against the society or government, especially in the North East Zone of the country to come out and present their grievances to the Ambassador Galtimari led Committee which has been appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan to look into the security situation in the North Eastern part of the country with a view to doing everything possible to restore normalcy and resolve grievances”.

Assuring that government is doing everything possible to address insecurity issues in the country particularly in the North East, the minister said, “I therefore implore all law abiding citizens to cooperate with security agencies to assist and ensure the maintenance of law and order within the entire nation”.

“At the same time, the ministry of Defence is concurrently making efforts to orientate the Armed Forces to make them civilian friendly in their approach to tackle insecurity issues.

“Presently our Armed Forces are doing a very good job in the protection of live and property of Nigerian citizens in the various theatres of internal security and peace keeping operations”.

“However, a few bad among them eggs amongst them sometimes over react to situations and create discontent amongst the civilian population thereby dragging the name of the military to disrepute”.
