Al-Mustapha: Comments may affect national security — TMG

The Transition Monitoring Group has described the recent comments by the former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sanni Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, on the circumstances surrounding the death of the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, as dangerous and a huge threat to national security.

In a statement, which was signed by its Chairman, Mr. Mashood Erubami, the civil society organisation also faulted Al-Mustapha’s claim that highly placed Nigerians, including some Yoruba leaders, played key roles in the annulment of Abiola’s political mandate, saying it could seriously affect the unity of the nation

The TMG urged President Goodluck Jonathan, the State Security Service, the Directorate of Military Intelligence, and the Nigeria Police to fish out those alleged by Al-Mustapha to have received bribes from the military in order to support the annulment of the June 12 presidential election.

The TMG however noted that Al-Mustapha’s statements had re-echoed public outcry against the annulment of the June 12 election.

The group said, “The recent revelation by Mustapha has shown that there was more to the annulment of the election than met the eye. Therefore only a thorough investigation of everything the man has said can erase possible doubts about the roles played by certain individuals in the annulment.

“We believe that those principles underpinning the credibility of the June 12 election should be upheld for the sanctity of future elections in the country. Such principles must be respected so as to strengthen the foundation of Nigeria’s unity and the sustainability of its constituents.”
