Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolemenen yesterday said Lagos residents will soon have cause to smile following the readiness of the Federal Government to tackle the decayed federal road infrastructure in Lagos.
Giving the assurance during the inspection tour of federal roads in Lagos, Arc. Onolemenen whose visit to the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria was his first official assignment outside Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory noted that he realized the strategic role of Lagos in the nation, pointing out that with that in mind, Federal Ministry of Works as an agent of the government will do all that is within its powers to ensure that road infrastructure in Lagos particularly those that serve the economy are put in good motorable condition all year round.
The Minister who noted that he noticed during the inspection that most of the federal roads in Lagos are in the state of disrepair, however said it was gratifying to note that contractors handling Oshodi/Apapa Expressway are on ground. He said what was expected of the Ministry was to drive the contractors so that the spate of work can be accelerated than it is presently, explaining that “on our part, we have a challenge that has to do with funding. We will do all we can to ensure that certificates are paid as at when due so that cost overrun does not set in.
“The contractors handling Oshodi/Apapa Expressway, Julius Berger and Brini Prono are very competent. We are satisfied with their work plan. What is left for us is to meet our part of the bargain so that the pace of work like I said earlier can increased. The contractors have assured me also that after the rains, the pace of work is going to increase.
“So, if that is done, and Lagos State Government collaborates with us, as we discussed with Gov. Babatunde Fashola in his office this morning, particularly in the management of the out close to the road, Lagos residents will soon have cause to smile”, the Minister stated.
