We ‘ll start to plan for 2015 polls – Jega

…blames irregularities in April election on time constraint
 BY OKEY NDIRIBE

ABUJA-Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega, has said the commission had a duty to begin planning early for the next general elections in 2015.
He further stated that some of the irregularities which occurred during last April’s general elections were due to the time constraint faced by the commission.

Jega made these remarks at a retreat for electoral officers to evaluate the 2011 voter registration exercise and general elections yesterday.

He stated that the commission didn’t have a lot of time to plan and prepare for the last election and voter registration.

Said he: “ But before the next general elections we do have ample time. We must start early, that is why the commission has defined a post-election programme of activities which commenced with the appointment of an independent committee to help us do a study and evaluate both the voter registration and elections.”

He said INEC had arranged a series of retreats which would give the commission the in-house opportunity to put heads together and assess what went wrong and what was done right and begin to plan for the future.

He said the management of the commission knew that holding the last election would be difficult,“ but we also knew it was a job that could be done and we have done it, but we can do even more.”
