PDP trustees meet next week over party chairmanship

The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is to meet on Tuesday next week to deliberate on issues confronting the party since the end of the general elections.

The board which is headed by former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

An invitation to members of the board obtained by NEXT in Abuja yesterday said its 37th meeting will hold in the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa at 8pm. It will hold ahead of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 28.

The invitation was signed by the acting national chairman, Abubakar Kawu Baraje.
Although the invitation did not state the agenda of the meeting, sources say one of the issues billed for discussion is the ratification of Mr Baraje and Musa Babayo as the acting national chairman and acting national secretary, respectively.

Messrs Baraje and Babayo were appointed into the positions last week following the appointment of the former acting chairman, Bello Haliru Mohammed as defence minister. The national auditor, Samuel Ortom was equally named as the minister of state for trade and investment.

Mr Mohammed had said that the confirmation of Messrs Baraje and Babayo would follow due process as the various organs of the party would have to meet for the purpose.

Apart from approving the new appointments, the BoT may also discuss the agenda of the proposed national convention of the party billed for later this year or next.
According to our source, the decisions of the trustees will also form the agenda of the meeting of the NEC, the highest organ of the party, to ratify the resolutions of the other organs of the party.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that Mr Baraje was directed to convene the meeting of the BoT because its secretary, Abdullahi Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, resigned the position last year to contest election to the Senate.

Support for Babayo
Meanwhile, as the battle for the party’s national chairmanship seat heats up, the Northeast PDP Solidarity Forum (PDPSF) on Monday threw their weight behind Mr Babayo for the substantive post.
The group, in a statement signed by Aliyu Ibrahim and Adamu Hassan, President (Bauchi) and Secretary General (Taraba) respectively, the group described Mr Babayo as the only candidate capable of steering the ship of the party in its present state.

“Apart from being the most competent, qualified and appropriate person to occupy the position of National Chairman of our great party, we also want him because he has the wherewithal to move the party forward,” they said. “Age is on his side. In fact, the position of the national chairman of a big party like PDP should not be given to a novice or just anybody. We decided to support him because Mr Babayo has considerable knowledge and experience that cut across all spheres.” While disclosing that the Forum will commence a tour of all the 19 northern states of the country to popularise the candidature of the politician, the group commended the National Working Commiittee (NWC) of the party in zoning the position of the party’s national chairmanship to the Northeast.
