Oshiomhole wants ACN to choose selfless leaders

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has advised the South-South chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to select selfless leaders who would work for the interest of the people.
He gave the advice yesterday when he granted audience to South-South ACN leaders led by their Vice Chairman, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu at Government House, Benin City.

“These people are not invincible. But it would require a level of commitment and you should be prepared for a long distance race.  It cannot be a 100 metres dash.  Which is why in selecting leaders, you have to look for people who are not opportunists, people who are going to a direction because they think that is where the food is. You have to believe in a cause,” he said.

Responding, Pastor Ize-Iyamu said they were in Benin City for the South-South leaders’ meeting, and praised Oshiomhole for his outstanding performance since assuming office.
“They have told me to tell you that you have become a reference point for them in their states and they are always proud to tell their people what you are doing here.  They are also hoping that in the near future, they would be able to invite you to talk to their people and campaign so that their own states can become ACN states,” he noted.

In a related development, Bishop Austine Akubueze of the Catholic Diocese of Benin City, has praised Oshiomhole for the ongoing infrastructural developments in the state, and for his effort to reposition the state.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the governor yesterday, Bishop Akubueze said: “The quality of education in the state has improved because without it, nothing can work. We have come to thank you for what you are doing for the state and the church,” he noted.

The Bishop also used the opportunity to ask the governor to consider handing over the new schools to different stakeholders for effective running of the institutions.
Responding, Oshiomhole said the return of schools to missionaries is important to him, especially in the area of instilling discipline in students and teachers.

“There is however the fear over the reintroduction of school fees by the missionaries, thereby posing as entry barrier for children of the poor. At present, the state charges zero fees for Junior Secondary Students (JSS) and charges Senior Secondary Students (SSS) N1,500. But this issue would be addressed by a committee that would be set up to look into the matter,” he said.
