Ogun State sacks 2,000 workers

The 2,000 workers employed at the tail end of former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel's tenure yesterday received the shock of their lives as they were reportedly sent packing by the new government. The development made the workers embark on a protest across the state capital.

The aggrieved workers carried various placards with inscriptions such as "Amosun promised us better living, not disappointment", "Where is your wind of change?", "Governor Amosun, this is unfair", "Ten thousand jobs must start from somewhere", among others.

Reacting to their alleged development, the protesters said the news of their sack was verbally handed down to them by their various Permanent Secretaries in their respective ministries.

"They just called us out this morning, announcing to us that we should go home," one of the sacked workers is reported to have said.

NEXT investigations revealed that the sacked workers vented their anger on the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, when he came to address them at the governor's office during the protest, insisting that the governor must address them.
When the governor failed to show up, the protesters, armed with leaves, made for the House of Assembly to register their displeasure to the lawmakers, explaining that they were victims of politics which they were not part of.

Responding, the Speaker, House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, appealed to the protesters to remain calm over the development, assuring them that the assembly would look into their issue. He counselled the protesters to forward their letter of complaint to the Assembly to act on.

However, Governor Amosun's Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Funmi Wakama, in a statement said it was a rumour that the government had asked the affected workers to disengage from service immediately. She explained that what the workers were asked to do was to re-apply, for their appointment to go through due process.
"No responsible government would allow illegality to stand. We have said all those recruited in April by the last administration should go and re-apply. If you are here and you have not re-applied, please go and do that immediately.

"I can assure you that no single person that is qualified and who has passed through due process will be denied employment; they will be re-engaged immediately," the statement said.
"We met a lot of rot when we came in and this government is still in the process of going through them one by one. What you are protesting about today is strange to me."
"This is a humane government that respects the rule of law. We won't be taking away jobs but we will instead be creating jobs. That I can promise you," Ms Wakama added.
