The Academic Staff Union of Universities has alleged that some powerful forces in the National Assembly are deliberately stalling the implementation of the agreement it signed with the Federal Government in 2009.
ASUU, in a statement on Sunday, said part of the agreement included the extension of the retirement age of university academics on the professorial cadre from 65 years to 70years.
The body made the allegation in a statement by its Ilorin Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Pius Enikanselu, on behalf of ASUU branches in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ladoke Akintola University, University of Ado-Ekiti, Adekunle Ajasin University, the Federal University of Technology, Akure and the University of Ilorin.
ASUU explained that the agreement was freely entered into on the understanding that the cadre of academics was needed for the training of doctoral candidates.
It noted that the doctorate degree holders “were badly needed to fill vacancies in our grossly understaffed government and private universities and industries.”
These eventual PhD holders, the statement added, “are required to train Nigerian students and that of other nationalities in these universities.”
