Japan lift Women’s World Cup

Japan defeated the United States in a penalty kick shootout to win the Women’s World Cup in Frankfurt, Germany on Sunday.

The United States missed three of four penalty kicks, while Japan made three of four.

Homare Sawa tied the score for Japan at 2-2 late in the second 15-minute overtime period, diverting a corner kick past US goal Hope Solo in the 116th minute and forcing the shootout.

Japan’s Azusa Iwashimizu was given a red card in the 119th minute when she denied a scoring chance just outside the penalty box, but the US was unable to convert the ensuing free kick.

Abby Wambach put the US up 2-1 with another dazzling header. Wambach, whose header goal late in overtime of the quarterfinals vs, Brazil saved the US from elimination, scored in the 103d minute off a serve from Alex Morgan. It was the third straight game in which Wambach scored on a header at a most opportune time. She also connected on one in the semifinals vs. France for the game-winner.

Morgan put the US up 1-0 when she chased down a clearing pass from Megan Rapinoe and shot from outside the goal box in the 69th minute.

Aya Miyama tied it 1-1 in the 80th minute from only a few yards in front of US goalie Hope Solo. The goal was the result of a chaotic scene in front of Solo, and was finished when Miyama gained possession off a failed clearing pass from Ali Krieger and shot it into the corner of the net.
