The Federal Government has earmarked N9 billion for the reconstruction and beautification of the Muritala Muhammed International Airport road, as part of measures to enhance its aesthetics and ensure free flow of traffic in and out of the airport premises.
This was disclosed Friday by the minister for works, Mr Mike Onolememen, during a courtesy visit to Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state at the Governor’s house, Lagos.
“On the reconstruction and beautification of the Muritala Muhammed Airport way, the FG is completing work on the memo and in the next few weeks, the contract will be awarded to HI-Tech.
“In fact, the FG intends to spend N9 billion on that road. And the fund was included in the 2011 budget. The reason is that the road serves as a gateway to the country in that visitors coming into the country pass through it,” he said.
The minister said apart from the reconstruction of the failing airport road, other federal roads in Lagos would also be reconstructed as the federal government had commenced process of repair.
He said some of the roads include the Apapa/Oshodi Express road and the failed portions of the Lagos/Abeokuta express road.
Onolememen said: “The Federal Government has decided to give special attention to the road. This is because of its importance to the economy of the country, as it boosts the image of the country.”
The minister, however, urged the Lagos State government, Nigerian Port Authority, NPA and other companies along Apapa-Oshodi axis to collaborate with the federal government to maintain the road, adding, “the road should not be left for the federal government alone.”
He attributed the recent flood which ravaged the axis on the blockage of drainage channels on the road.
Responding, Fashola thanked the Minister for showing interest in the state, saying the government would offer assistance to the Federal government’s efforts in improving infrastructure in the state.
The governor said that the Federal Government should be more forthcoming in granting approval to the state in its efforts at improving some federal infrastructure in the state, saying this would enhance the maintenance of the these infrastructures.
