Collapsed building: Boy rescued after 24 hours

A six-year-old boy was late Wednesday pulled out of the collapsed building at the Idumota area of Lagos Island alive, more than 24 hours after the incident.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the boy, who has not been identified, was pulled out of the rubbles with just a few bruises.

A witness, however, told NAN that the parents of the boy were among those killed in the incident.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government on Thursday said it would demolish three adjourning buildings to the four-storey building, located at Mogaji Street, Idumota.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba, who annouced the plan, said the demolition would allow for the speedy rescue of those still trapped in the collapsed building.

He said, “The owners of the three adjourning buildings discovered to be distressed have agreed that their structures be pulled down to allow for the movement of heavy machines to the site of the collapsed building.

“The Lagos State Government is therefore appealing to the residents of the buildings to evacuate.”

No fewer than 10 people had been reported dead, while about 34 people were rescued on Wednesday.

The commissioner said the delay in rescuing those still trapped in the rubble was because of the inability of the Lagos State Emergency Management, the Red Cross, National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Ambulance Services and other relevant agencies to move heavy machines to the site.

Ibirogba, who regretted the loss of lives, said immediately the buildings were pulled down; the rescuers would be able to work effectively.

Ibirogba also called on members of the public to report distressed buildings and illegal constructions around them to the appropriate authorities.

He urged engineers, builders, architects, and other professionals to ensure that they authenticate their materials from the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory.
