Bomb scare in UNIJOS VC’s office

The office of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof Hayward Mafuyai, had to be evacuated Friday when a staff raised the alarm that an unidentified man had entered the building.
It was gathered that one of the members of staff saw a strange man coming out of the administration block and not knowing his mission, alerted his colleagues to the man’s presence on the school premises.
A member of staff told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity that, “The strange man did not look like any of our staff or student. We then went towards the direction of the office he was coming from to find out if they knew him but we found out that the suspect was not known as one of us or as a visitor.”

The administration staff said everyone in the school became afraid because the stranger suddenly disappeared and all efforts to locate him on the campus were futile.
This development was said to have scared all the members of staff and a distress call was put through to the state police command and men of the anti-bomb squad were immediately despatched to the institution.
When the team of policemen got to the university, they evacuated all the members of staff and carried out a thorough check.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Apev Jacob said that the anti-bomb squad combed the area but found nothing harmful and encouraged everyone to go back to their respective offices.
Meanwhile, the Force Headquarters in Abuja has deployed a large number of men in its anti-terrorism squad to the state to counter the growing threats of terrorist groups.
About 120 members of the squad arrived Jos, the state capital on Friday.
Our correspondent sighted the transferred policemen receiving instructions at the Command headquarters in Jos but it was not immediately known what section they would be deployed to and what their roles would be as the military Special Task Force is still in place.
It was however gathered they may be joining the newly formed “Operation Rainbow” which was set up by Governor Jonah Jang in February to maintain law and order in the state.
Already, all the mobile policemen attached to the STF have been withdrawn and may join the ‘Operation Rainbow.’
Apev, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, confirmed the arrival of the anti-terrorism squad but refused to give details.
Apev said he would call our correspondent probably after getting a clearance from his superiors but as at press time, he was yet to return the call.
However, SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that the transfer of the policemen is connected to the growing apprehension in Jos and the recent attack on a police station in Toro, Bauchi State by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.
Toro is less than 20 kilometers to Jos.
The state police command had recently taken measures to ensure safety of police formations and personnel. Visitors to all police stations are thoroughly screened, while motor cycle riders are barred from getting near police stations.
The Police Commissioner, Mr. Abdulraham Akano, was also redeployed while Mr. Emmanuel Ayeni, who supervised the April election in the state, was assigned to take over from him.
