David Mark was Monday returned and re-elected as the senate president of the seventh Senate, while his Deputy Ike Ekweremadu also returned in an election where both were picked without any dissent. Unlike in 2007 when Mark went through a rigorous process when he defeated George Akume, Mark was the only one nominated by Victor Ndoma-Egba and the nomination was seconded by Smart Adeyemi.
Ekweremadu's re-nomination was made by Zainab Kure and seconded by Ahmed Lawan.
Mark, who was dressed in a white flowing gown, took his oath and performed his first official function by asking the clerk of the Senate Ben Efeture to perform the oath on the senators-elect.
In his acceptance speech, he said he was humbled but promised to be “honest, transparent, fair and ensure equity and justice and above all, I will preside with fear of God”.
Mark said: “Our budgeting system needs a radical change. There is need for collaboration between the executive and the National Assembly to ensure that Nigerians get a budget that can be effective implemented. Nigerians complain that our democracy is too expensive.
We, as representatives of the people, must initiate legislation that will reduce cost of governance at all levels, thereby freeing resources to attend to the basic needs of the people”.
According to him, “Over the next few weeks, we need to identify and prioritise key areas where legislations would be required for the rapid transformation of the economy and polity. We would also seek to strengthen the analytical capacity of the National Assembly as it relates to budgeting and oversight functions.”
