The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Lagos on Friday, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to consider two ministerial slots for the state in view its strategic economic and political position in the country.
The Lagos State Secretary of the party, Tunji Shelle, in a statement, said that Lagos was a major economic hub of the country and deserved the right level of focus given to it at the federal level.
“The number of votes cast for Mr President in Lagos at the last election, which was the highest in the South-West, is a clear demonstration of the support Mr President enjoys in Lagos,” he said.
“We appeal to Mr President to consider our plea which we believe is good for Lagos, Nigeria and Mr President.”
On a comment made by an anonymous party source questioning the retention of Olusegun Aganga as a minister in the federal cabinet under PDP Lagos, the statement said that Aganga was a PDP Lagos card carrying member.
It noted that the minister was in fact not only the facilitator for the party in Lagos at the last elections but had been the link between the PDP Lagos and the federal government in the last one year.
“Aganga performed these roles creditably well and has been commended at different times by the party,” the statement said. “Mr President has also been made aware of his outstanding performances and contributions to the party. So PDP Lagos has nothing against the person or nomination of Mr Olusegun Aganga as he was one of the, if not the, most outstanding ministers in the last dispensation.
However the issue is that we believe that Lagos PDP deserves to have two ministers this time around considering the strategic, economic and political sophistication of Lagos to Nigeria and the federal government.”
