Adeyemi Adefule, the federal controller of environment in Lagos, has said that the federal government has approved the third-phase of the embankment of the Lagos shorelines. Mr Adefule told the News Agency of Nigeria that the Federal Ministry of Environment had submitted its take-off proposal to government for financial back-up for project.
“The Ministry has within the last 10 years successfully executed the first and second phases of embankment construction along Marina, Bonny Camp, Federal Place Hotel and Military Hospital shorelines,” he said.
Mr Adefule said that unprotected shorelines could submerge settlements, communities and destroy farmlands, animals and food crops.
He said that government was aware of the importance of shoreline protection and maintenance and would sustain maintenance of the existing embankments along the shorelines.
Mr Adefule, however, decried the unregulated sand dredging along the Lagos coastline, saying that such activities could impact negatively on the government’s shoreline protection project.
He urged the Lagos State and Federal Governments as well as other stakeholders to come up with appropriate regulatory framework for sand dredging in the state.
“As a matter of urgency, we all need to act fast to protect our water bodies and environment from imminent emergencies and disasters.
“The situation should not be allowed to go out of control before acting. We need to be proactive,” Mr Adefule said.
