Civil rights group calls for punishment of soldiers in badagry killling

The  Access to Justice, AJ,  has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to punish the soldiers who reportedly massacred about 14 policemen including a Divisional Police Officer, DPO, and his deputy in a reprisal attack over the death of an Army Sergeant in Badagry, Lagos last week.

In a statement in Lagos yesterday, the Executive Director of the group, Joseph Otteh said  ‘’President Jonathan needs to address, in an urgent and forthright manner, the issue of reprisal killings by the law enforcement and security forces’’to de-emphasise the culture of impunity and abuse of power and privilege that has eaten deep into the psyche of law enforcement agencies and formed a part of their socialization’’.

Access to Justice made the the statement as members of the rank and file in the police have criticised the role played by both the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim and the Lagos state Police Commissioner, Yakubu Alkali over the killings of their officers saying that ‘’it showed the level of their timidity, indolence and lack of care for the welfare of their men’

According to Otteh, the fact that ‘’the (police) officers too can be victims of extra-judicial killings by other security agencies who operate unaccountably – such as the military’’ showed the levity with which the governments treat cases involving the murder of innocent people in the society.
