Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State
Ajimobi warns against pressure on political appointees
The Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has urged family members and friends of political appointees not to mount undue pressure on them to make go against their oath of office.
Mr Ajimobi gave the charge in Ibadan on Monday while swearing in the newly appointed secretary to the state government and the chief of staff.
According to him, events have shown that the pressure from family members, friends and associates are responsible for how appointees are "railroaded while in office."
"Family members and friends of our appointees should know that this administration is not only poised to reduce governmental waste, ours will not be one that flagrantly tampers with public patrimony. Appointments in our administration would be calls to serve our state and not to enrich appointees unduly," he said.
The governor, last week, announced the appointment of Waheed Akin Olajide and Adeolu Akande as secretary to the state government and chief of staff respectively. He also appointed Festus Adedayo as his senior special assistant on public communication.
Competence as key
"As it is usual with all appointments, when we communicated our choice of these appointees to the world last week, it was met with a mixture of commendation and flaks. Gladly, the majority of the citizenry appreciated that competence, loyalty and ability to contribute meaningful quotas to the uplift of our state reigned supreme in the choice of principal officers of our administration."
He however, promised the party members, who worked towards his success at the primaries and the governorship election that he would give them consideration when other appointments are to be made.
The governor used the occasion to further assure the state civil servants of his commitment to paying the N18,000 minimum wage and make them smile for working for the state, but added that he would need to engage them in discussions to arrive at the appropriate ways of achieving the objectives.
