The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, said on Monday that Nigeria would not invite “controversial leaders” to the inauguration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Ahmed spoke in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the programme for the inauguration.
He said a lot of importance was attached to the inauguration that the government could not afford to invite any controversial personality to grace the occasion.
The scribe said 40 heads of government were invited for the inauguration, adding that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had received acknowledgement from 15 leaders.
He said the committee was still expecting more acknowledgements, and that the government would make adequate preparations to host them.
Ahmed put the cost of the inauguration at N1bn.
He said the 63 political parties and their presidential candidates would also be invited.
“It is very significant to accord to them their status as elder statesmen.
“It is by right, not by our discretion, to invite political parties,” Ahmed said.
He gave the assurance that adequate security measures would be made to check any security breach.
“We are satisfied that our security agencies are prepared to tackle security challenges.
“We are not unaware of the security challenges in our country, but our security agencies are on the alert to check any security breach.” the SGF added.
In a vote of thanks, Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Prof. Dapo Afolabi, urged the media to continue to report Nigeria positively.
He lauded the media for contributing to the development and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, amidst fears that some persons may disrupt the Sunday inauguration of Senator Abiola Ajimobi as the governor of Oyo State, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adisa Bolanta, has warned troublemakers to steer clear the venue of the inauguration.
The inaugural ceremony is billed for the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium (formerly Liberty Stadium), Ibadan, the state capital while the actual hand over will take place at the Governor’s office in Agodi.
Bolanta told journalists in Ibadan on Tuesday that his command was battle-ready to ensure a hitch-free transition from the incumbent, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, to Ajimobi.
“We will not allow anybody to disrupt the inauguration of the new governor and the peace of the state. We have enough personnel to checkmate any attempt to disrupt the inauguration ceremony,” the police boss said.
He urged residents of the state to operate within the ambit of the law before, during and after the inauguration as his command would not watch people take the law into their hands.
