There were controversies in the Niger Delta on Wednesday following uncertainties surrounding the whereabouts of the most wanted militant commander and leader of the Niger Delta Liberation Force, General John Togo.
Conflicting claims had emanated from the group since the Joint Task Force, codenamed Operation Restore Hope, declared Togo wanted for attempting to disrupt the fragile peace in the Niger Delta and to derail the amnesty programme of the Federal Government.
While rumour of Togo’s death and his secret burial had spread across the region from the creeks, a Spokesperson for NDLF, Mark Anthony, had said that the group including its leader had concluded an arrangement to surrender for the sake of humanity.
However, our correspondent gathered that the confusion was heightened following an allegation by the Administrator of the Rehabilitation Camp for ex-militants in Obubra, Cross River State, Ekpein Appah, that the Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, was hiding Togo in Government House, Yenagoa.
Appah who spoke with unusual certainty asked security operatives to fish out Togo from Government House and challenged Sylva to produce Togo so that he would answer for his crime against humanity.
Reacting to the development, the Spokesman for JTF, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha, said all the claims of NDLF including the allegation by Appah that Togo was hiding in the Bayelsa Government House were calculated attempts by Togo and his managers to deceive members of the public.
He said Togo planned the strategies in order to attract sympathy from members of the public and escape justice.
He noted that as a professional military outfit, the JTF would not fall victim of the deception and warned the media and members of the public to be mindful of Togo’s new tricks.
He said, “Against the backdrop of recent reports in the media, the JTF wishes to state that the claim of surrender by John Togo, the allegation by Ekpein Appah that Togo is a guest of Bayelsa State Government and the purported death and secret burial of Togo are all an intricate web of lies by Togo and his managers to deceive, the public, attract sympathy and escape justice.”
