Presidency moves to salvage zoning of party offices

Vice-President Namadi Sambo met with newly elected members of the National Assembly in Abuja on Saturday in a move to make sure that the zoning of political offices by the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party stands.


The meeting was attended by members of the Seventh Assembly Group and their leader, Dr. Abdulmumin Jubrin (House of Representatives member -elect from Kano), whose group has been canvassing the liberalization of the leadership positions in the National Assembly.

Sambo met with members of the Assembly at the Transcorp Hilton to preach the supremacy of party discipline that would enthrone the respect for zoning as canvassed by the national caucus of PDP.

It was gathered that the National Vice-Chairman of PDP in the South-West, Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo, also solicited support for the emergence of Speaker of the House of Representatives from the zone.

He was also said to have circulated letters calling for the support of the members of the House for the choice of Mr. Muraina Ajibola as the new speaker.

Sambo, who briefly addressed the House before it went into a closed door session, called on the members to forget about party affiliations but work for the purpose of enthroning enduring democracy in the country.

Jubrin ,who is said to be eyeing the office of the deputy speaker, also called on his colleagues to be alive to party decisions, stating among other issues that the group was formed to foster unity and to move the country forward.

He also said that the group would not compromise qualities of the would-be principal officers of the House.

He promised that the group would screen all aspirants to the office of the Speaker for the purpose of ensuring that the best is elected to preside over the affairs of the House.

He said, “The group will not compromise the unity of the country, integrity of the House in terms of the quality of its leadership.

“We must screen everybody who wants to lead the House and every candidate will tell us his agenda for the House, for the country and the newly elected members.”
