Osama: FG beefs up security at airports

Facts emerged on Wednesday evening that the Federal Government had beefed up security across the nation’s airports, especially the international ones.

The Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mr. Richard Aisuebeogun, dropped the hint while inspecting some parts of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, along with the chief executive officers of some aviation organisations.

He said the move followed the global fear of reprisal attacks from the followers of the slain Al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden.

Countries, including the United States had beef up security across their airports following the killing of bin Laden by the US’s Navy SEALs on Sunday.

Aisuebeogun noted that some passengers might encounter tougher screening and delay at the airports due to the development.

The FAAN boss warned that those who do not have clear activities to carry out at the airport should steer clear of the airports.

Already, he said that 138 people had been arrested and would be charged for loitering around the Lagos airport.

The Director-General, NCAA, Dr Harold Demuren, had earlier in the week summoned all the aviation agencies and airlines to a security meeting, where he alerted them of the urgent need for them to enforce tougher security measures.

He told them passengers who refused to be screened must be denied boarding.
