Rather than thaw, the crisis rocking the Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the suspension of the minister of defence, Adetokunbo Kayode, assumed another dimension yesterday as some of the party's leaders in Akoko North West local government area of Ondo State yesterday backed the suspension.
Mr Kayode, who hails from the council, was recently suspended by the party's state executives over his alleged involvement in anti-party activities before and during the last general elections.
In a statement signed by 10 political leaders from the area, they faulted a statement earlier issued by its acting chairperson, Alaba Arohunmolase, kicking against the minister's suspension.
Some of the leaders who signed the statement include Solomon Oladunni, S.O. Asagunla and Lawrence Adu. In a statement signed by 10 PDP leaders in the council described the action of its acting chairperson as illegal and authorised.
The party leaders accused the minister of working against the candidates of the party in the area during the April general elections.
They said that they were not surprised about the support given to the defence minister by Mr Arohunmolase because he was a personal assistant to the minister before he was picked to become acting chairperson.
Strange bedfellows
"Kayode has never left anyone in doubt that his sympathy lies with the Labour Party (LP) which, as far as he is concerned, is PDP number one in the state. In any case, he was very often in the company of LP leaders, including Olusegun Mimiko, the governor of the state, and Olu Agunloye," the party leaders said.
"Agunloye had crossed over to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to pick the party's senatorial ticket. The minister still could not help finding comfort in his ally's company. On the day of the national assembly election, Kayode spent the rest of the day in Agunloye's house after casting his vote.
"On many occasions, he declared even publicly that he was only interested in the presidential election. He attended only one campaign rally throughout the period of elections and that was the only one organised by the president."
The leaders urged the party's state leadership to stick to its stance over the suspension, stressing that all supporters of the party were fully behind the state executives over the matter.
