The Anambra State Government has distributed N21.7 million to farmers as part of its package for 2011 farming season to boost food production in the state.
At the launching of the program, which took place in Awka, Governor Peter Obi said the money released would aid the establishment of a developed private sector-driven agriculture.
He stated that farmers were key elements to the vision of reducing hunger and extreme poverty in the country. Expressing commitment to the agricultural development of the state, Obi said that his administration has created 2,000 jobs in the education sector and is targeting 1,000 jobs each in the agricultural sector and industrial sectors.
He said part of the mission of the government is to ensure agriculture is taken as a career by the youths. "Our target is to ensure that youths in the state take agriculture as a career,” he said.
He noted that the government is working on constructions of roads and bridges to ensure there are accessible roads to farming communities in the state.
Godson Ezenagu, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, said that as a demonstration of the government's commitment, 4,000 tonnes of fertiliser, tractors and a variety of improved seedlings have been made available to assist farmers.
He said an approved distribution of fertiliser to farmers at 25 per cent subsidy, has been made in the bid to make the product affordable. The commissioner had earlier advised farmers to avoid farming around areas that are likely to be flooded due to the anticipated heavy rains expected this year.
