A Bauchi State Chief Magistrate Court has remanded 41 suspects arraigned for their alleged participation in the post election violence that led to the death of seven corps members, two policemen officers, two businessmen and many others.
Of this number, 21 were arrested in Jama’are Local Government Area; while the remaining 20 were arrested in Giade Local Government Area during and after the violence in the state. The suspects were charged separately with criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide and mischief by fire, contrary to section 96,221,337 of the penal code laws.
Arraigning the 21 suspects from Jama’are Local Government Area, the prosecutor, Iliya Kaura told the court that the suspects conspired among themselves to invade Jama’are Police Station and attacked a Police officer, Saleh Dahiru, after which they set the entire station ablaze. He said they also destroyed shops and places of worship, contrary to the penal code laws.
After reading the charges, the suspects said they understood the charges. The presiding judge, Mohammed Mukhtar Abubakar thereafter ordered the suspects to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to June 2, 2011 for mentioning.
Also arraigning the 20 suspects from Giade Local Government Area, the prosecutor, Mohammed Kafin Madaki told the court that the suspects, with others at large, conspired to attack and kill seven corps members, one female police officer and two businessmen.
He said they also burnt down the Divisional Police Headquarters in Giade and six vehicles parked inside the station, as well as shops and places of worship, contrary to the penal code laws.
After the suspects were asked by the court, they responded that they understood the charges against them, Mr Abubakar ordered that they also be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to May31, 2011 for further mentioning.
