Army begins destruction of arms recovered from e-militants

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday commenced the destruction of arms and weapons recovered from ex- Niger Delta militants who were granted amnesty by the Federal Government in 2009.

The recovered arms were crushed into smaller particles at the Army 82 Division Barracks in Enugu.

At the destruction venue in Lokpanta, in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, President Goodluck Jonathan declared that anyone still carrying arms in the guise of militancy was doing so at his own risk as such person would face the full wrath of the law.

Jonathan, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Niger Delta, and chairman of the Niger Delta Post-amnesty Committee, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army and other relevant stakeholders for achieving the feat.

He said, “Since the disarmament of a total of 20,192 Niger Delta ex-militants in 2009, the amnesty programme has been recording profound achievements.”

He said the skill acquisition training, home and abroad, offered the programme by the incumbent administration had made it possible for peace, safety and security to return to the once troubled region.

To this end, the president noted that Nigeria now produces about 2.3 million barrels of crude oil per day as against 700,000 barrels per day at the height of insurrections in the region in 2008.

He said, “In pursuance of the amnesty programme, other core objectives

of demobilising and reintegrating the former militants into the civil society, 16,336 of the total enrolled number of 20,192 in the first phase of the programme have undertaken no-violence transformational training at the Amnesty Demobilisation Camp, located in Obubra, Cross River State.”

He added, “Following the completion of non-violence training and carrier classification in the camp, the amnesty office has successfully placed about 5,000 of the trainees in skills acquisition|training centres within the country, while another 2,618 have commenced their training in reputable institutions outside the shores of the nation.”
