The campaign organisation of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio has accused leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) of exhibiting ignorance over the political events in the state.
The group was reacting to a statement credited to a leader of ACN, Bola Tinubu that the party was going to defeat Mr Akpabio at the elections petition tribunal.
Mr Tinubu, who spoke during a retreat for the ACN legislators-elect in Lagos on Monday, described the party as the fastest growing political party in Nigeria.
“We are in effective control of six states and constitute the most potent and viable opposition at the centre,” he said. “And we have very strong cases to retrieve our stolen mandates in such states as Akwa Ibom, Benue and Kwara.” But the Godswill 2011 Campaign Organisation, headed by Emmanuel Udoh, faulted Mr Tinubu over his reference to Akwa Ibom.
Ignorance
It said his “ignorance” has led to an “unwarranted outburst” regarding the re-election of Mr Akpabio as the governor of Akwa Ibom State. “It is clear that Tinubu is obviously at variance with the true political situation in Akwa Ibom State, and so could afford to come out and make statements without cross-checking the reality on ground.” The group says that Mr Tinubu is being unnecessarily flippant and added that “it is foolhardy for anyone to insult the integrity of the totality of Akwa Ibom people who came out in their droves to vote massively for the re-election of their governor.” The group noted that Mr Akpabio has a huge following in Akwa Ibom and called on ACN leaders to witness the swearing-in of the governor to convince themselves that the incumbent governor is indeed popular amongst his people.
Mr Tinubu’s statement, the organisation said, “was a reflection of the desperation from their (ACN) political camp, whose obsession with power has seen them criss-crossing political camps and parties, and forging strange alliances in a bid to acquire political power.”
