Airforce Jet crashes in Benue

PANIC spread across Mbazaam village near Yandev town in Gboko Local Council of Benue State after a fighter jet belonging to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) crashed close to the community school in the area yesterday.

However, no life was lost as the pilots escaped to safety before the crash. Farmers ran helter-skelter as the crash caused a loud sound as if an explosive had gone off.

An eyewitness told The Guardian that residents of the area noticed the aircraft hovering  at  a very low altitude, which convinced people that something was wrong.

According to him, few minutes later two men in the aircraft parachuted out of the aircraft, attracting the attention of youths and children who ran to where they were suspected to have landed.
The eyewitness said: “It was in the course of  running to the place where the men landed, that the loud noise was heard from another part of the village.”

Contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Tactical Air Command of NAF, Wing Commander Adedayo Makun, confirmed the crash.

He said: “An F-7Ni aircraft of the NAF crashed this morning at Yandev Mbaniongu Mbazaam near Yandev Community Secondary School, km 4 Buruku Rd. The two pilots on board successfully ejected from the aircraft. A NAF search and rescue helicopter from 305 Flying Training School Enugu has already sighted and recovered the pilots to NAF Medical Hospital, Makurdi. An investigative team ordered by CAS is already at the crash site to ascertain the  cause of the crash.”
