Police Deploy more men to Kaduna

THE Federal Government yesterday deployed over 200 anti-riot policemen from Lagos to Kaduna to quell the escalating riots in the northern parts of the country.
Violence had erupted in Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Taraba, Plateau and some other parts of the North after the Presidential election won by President Goodluck Jonathan.

At about 4.30pm yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, trucks conveying hundreds of anti-riot policemen were seen at the Presidential Wing of the airport, where they had initially wanted to take a special flight to Kaduna but were later directed to go through the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) hangar to board two Hercules C130 military aircraft that would take them to Kaduna State.

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Samuel Jinadu, confirmed the story, adding that his men were going to Kaduna to beef up security.

On the number of policemen dispatched to the troubled city, the PPRO declined comment.

Violence erupted shortly after the announcement of results of the presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which declared President Goodluck Jonathan winner.
Irate youths unleashed mayhem in the northern states of Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Yobe, Sokoto, Nasarawa, Gombe and Bauchi in protest against the results.
