PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan yesterday ordered the immediate suspension of Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho as Minister of Interior and a member of the Federal Executive Council.
Presidential spokesman, Ima Niboro, said in a statement that “Iheanacho has been directed to hand over to the Minister of Labour, Mr. Emeka Wogu, who will, in addition to his present portfolio, oversee that ministry (Interior).”
Niboro explained that “Capt. Iheanacho’s suspension comes as a result of a number of lapses in the political leadership of the Ministry traceable to his personal and official conduct. For now, his continued manning of the Ministry is not in the interest of the nation.”
Sources said his suspension is as a result of his political activities in his native state of Imo where he is accused of “using the power of his office to work against the official candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He’s been funding and openly working for candidates other than the PDP.”
It was also learnt that the minister’s cup was almost full recently when some foreigners, including the minister’s wife were granted citizenship through naturalisation and others. It was learnt yesterday that a security report on the process was not favourable to the minister who is now caught unawares in the murky waters of politics.
