FG Shelves FEC Meeting for polls

The meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) was yesterday shelved in the aftermath of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections.

Although no official reason was given for the postponement of the weekly meeting, a presidency official said it could be attributed to the fact that most, if not all, the ministers have travelled home to their constituencies to canvass for votes for their governors.

24 out of the 36 states of the federation had their election on Tuesday, with Kaduna and Bauchi holding today.
No minister turned up by the stipulated time for the start of the FEC meeting, leaving journalists who had no idea the meeting had been postponed, idling about. The Council meeting last week had lasted for about three hours, with almost all the ministers in attendance.

President Goodluck Jonathan was, however. in his office throughout the day. One of his aides said he was aware of the need for the ministers to travel to their home states for election purposes.
"The president granted them permission to go to their states and cast their votes. Since the election takes place in some other states, its only logical that they wait in their zones," the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

The ministers expect that, in exchange for their hard work during the guber polls, they will win nomination back to the federal executive in the event that the incumbent governor gets re-elected.
However, as the elections wind down and the government starts preparing for the transition period, ministers from states where the party lost the governorship race might find it difficult to get reappointed.

State governors usually nominate one candidate from their state who they deem fit to be appointed into the federal cabinet.
