Kaduna Youth Protest Presidential Election results

Lead ImageCrisis broke out in some parts of the city of Kaduna on Monday, following the presidential election on Saturday.

The disturbance, which started at the Rigasa area of the city when the news that Goodluck Jonathan was winning filtered in on Sunday, was between supporters of the Congress for Progressive Change and People's Democratic Party. The crisis later spread to Zaria, a major neighbouring town.

Some boys suspected to be CPC supporters invaded Sabo Tasha in Kaduna South, shooting indiscriminately on Sunday night. They set up fire on major roads in the capital city, and later burnt a police station in Tudan Wada and a catholic church in Abakpa area. The irate supporters also attacked houses of non-indigenes living in Tundun Wada.

In retaliation, other youth in the area burnt down Mosques in Barnawa, and Narayi areas in the southern part of the city. The situation got people scared of going out and there are no buses or motorcycles to aid movement, though the police were drafted within the metropolis almost immediately. Banks and markets were shut.

One Mr. Biggs on the Nnamdi Azikiwe by-pass in Rigasa was also burnt by the suspected CPC supporters. The boys almost staged an attack on the private residence of Vice President Sambo but for the timely intervention of security agents at the premises.

Fighting spread to Zaria
The youth in Zaria Monday morning took to the streets, shouting "Sai Buhari" (we are for Buhari) and burning tires on the road. Vehicles were allowed to pass if the drivers joined in shouting the slogan but many workers, afraid of the commotion, simply turned back and returned to the relative safety of their homes.

Around the Ahmadu Bello University, in Samaru, the youth caused traffic jam and doctors who usually passed there on their way to the teaching hospital at Shika stayed home.

A paediatrician, who preferred not to be named, told our correspondent that she and her husband, also a doctor at the teaching hospital, said they were observing the events.

"We just heard that they were going to burn the vehicle of the deputy vice president of the association of medical doctors, Dr. Atawodi. He narrowly escaped. He had to join in shouting, ‘sai Buhari' before they let him go," she said.

It was also learnt that doctors who spent the night on call at the hospital Sunday could not leave the place. "The boys have taken over the whole area," said a doctor stranded at the hospital. "We are just hoping things will cool down soon."
Youth had similarly taken over the streets near the Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic and people intent on travelling out of the town had to turn back.
One person was allegedly stabbed to death in a market near the Army depot in Zaria Sunday night during an argument that ensued between two people who came to drink there. They were arguing over the two presidential candidates, Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the CPC, and it led to one of them stabbing the other with a knife.

  1. Every word that is written page on this page is of how disapointed we are from kabala west region of kaduna. We were promised protection of lives and properties, but to our greatest suprise we have to battle our way to live and ther was no security forces to protect us from this criminals that call themselves CPC supporters, all they were after was to kill and distroy. We had to battle for over ten hours before the security forces were sent to rescue us. Now we the youth of kabala west are totally disapointed in Yakowa, what took him so long? if we hadn’t stood up for ourselves there would have been gross masacre, because these CPC criminals are willing to kill everything living. We were told we had the right to vote whoever we want, now why are the CPC forcing people to vote for them and why are they causing so much trouble, this election was free and fair, why must it be Buhari? Now we voted PDP in kabala west and we were not protected by its government. Dont expect anything good from us this time. Oluwatoye D. A
