Police in Lagos on Tuesday arrested 15 persons, among them six women for alleged electoral offenses during the governorship and state assembly elections in the state.
The women specifically were apprehended while attempting to snatch ballot boxes at unit 10 Falomo polling centre.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Suleiman Abba, who confirmed this, however refused to reveal the identities of the ladies.
According to him, it is important to protect their integrity in the interim.
Speaking to journalists who monitored the poll with him in Lagos, Abba said the women were arrested by policemen attached to the Area A police headquarters, Lagos Island, and were transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba.
The CP, nonetheless, said it was not true that the women went to the polling centre in a diplomatic vehicle.
He said, “That they went to the venue in a diplomatic car is a rumour. Nothing like that happened. I can however tell you that six women were arrested for suspected snatching of ballot boxes and it was the public that drew the attention of the police to them. The case is being investigated.”
In a related development, four armed men stormed a polling booth close to the General Hospital in Epe Local Government and forcibly collected the ballot boxes.
The armed men, pointed guns at the electoral officals before hijacking the ballot boxes and escaping on the two motorcycles.
The police however gave them a chase and arrested two of them.
Abba confirmed the incident, saying the suspects had also been transferred to the SCID.
At Itire, four men were arrested by the police for scaring voters with fireworks.
It was gathered that some of the voters thought the sound from the fireworks were gunshots and took to their heels.
The police also detained a man in Mushin for giving money to voters, while another was arrested for operating his commercial tricycle during the election period.
