Thieves Steal 20 DDC Machines

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may have lost no fewer than 20 Direct Data Capturing (DDC) machines to thieves who stormed various centres earmarked for the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Some of the machines were reported stolen in the stores in which they were kept by the commission.

Saturday Tribune findings, however, show that out of the 20 stolen machines, six had been recovered so far, while a number of suspected thieves had been charged before various law courts in the affected states.

Niger and Plateau states recorded the highest number of stolen DDC machines with the figure put at seven each, but out of the seven stolen in Plateau State, four had been recovered.

Borno, Kano and Bauchi states each lost two machines to thieves while police authorities were able to recover each in Borno and Bauchi states.

Saturday Tribune gathered that state Resident Electoral Commissioner in Niger State, Dr. Emmanuel Onuchero, reported the disappearance of six of the machines to state Police Commissioner, Mr. Michael Zuokumor, during the Inter-agency Consultative Committee meeting held at the Police Headquarters in Minna recently.

Three of the machines were said to have been stolen in Chanchaga Local Government Area of the state, two in Mashegu Local Government Area and one each in Bida and Tafa local government areas.

Both Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Oguche Richard Adamu and the INEC Public Affairs Officer, Mohammed Wase, confirmed the disappearance of the DDC machines.
