Senate Resumes Today: Voter registration, FoI Bill, 2011 Budget top agenda.

ABUJA — The technical hitches being experienced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in the registration of voters; the 2011 Appropriation Bill and the consideration of the Freedom of Information, FoI, Bill are some of the issues that would dominate the Senate as it resumes today after almost two months of recess for the Christmas and the New Year celebrations.

Vanguard gathered yesterday that the Senators are particularly irked by the epileptic performance of the Direct Data Capturing, DDC, machines deployed by INEC despite the huge sums of money approved by the National Assembly for the exercise.

Spokesman for the Senate, Senator Ayogu Eze, who confirmed these to Vanguard said the avalanche of protests from Nigerians mean that “we cannot keep quiet. Our constituents have been complaining and we cannot fold our arms and watch things. Certainly, we will discuss about the voters registration exercise,” he said.

He explained that the 2011 Appropriation Bill as well as the anti terrorism bll sent to the National Assembly by President Jonathan last year will also receive attention.

Senator Eze informed Vanguard that the 2011 Appropriation Bill would be given serious attention as it resumes today.
“Similarly, I think we will also revisit the issue of the Freedom of Information Bill. We will consider it when we resume tomorrow (today),” he said.
