The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has nullified the gubernatorial primary elections in Kogi and Kano states and ordered fresh ones.
The elections were respectively won by Jubrin Isah and Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State between 1999 and 2003.
It also ordered a re-run of the senatorial primaries in seven states. New primaries will hold in Delta Central, Oyo Central, Sokoto East, Bauchi North and Taraba Central senatorial districts. Others are Adamawa South, Adamawa North, Kogi Central, Kogi East and Kogi West senatorial districts.
A statement signed by the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Ahmed Rufa'i Alkali on yesterday, said the cancellation was ordered after evaluating reports from various panels set up to conduct the primaries as well as petitions from the contestants.
"The National Working Committee has deliberated on the petitions from various contestants across the Federation as well as the reports of our Appeal Committee set up specifically to look into complaints from aspirants. The NWC also received and deliberated on the reports from the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) who monitored the primaries.
"Consistent with the principled position of our great Party to provide a level playing field for all aspirants, and in view of the overall need to ensure continued unity and cohesion among the ranks and file of our members which is essential for us to achieve victory in the April 2011 General Elections, the NWC has resolved to conduct re-run primaries for the following Gubernatorial and Senatorial Seats," the statement said.
Bitter incumbents
The party also said that the re-run governorship primaries will hold on Tuesday while the senatorial primaries will hold the following day, Wednesday.
The party also said that only those cleared and who participated in the annulled exercises will participate in the re-run primaries.
Investigation shows that some of the incumbents who lost in the senatorial primaries include Grace Bent (Adamawa South), Smart Adeyemi (Kogi West), Mohammed Mana (Adamawa North) and Abubakar Gada (Sokoto East). The Oyo Central senatorial district was won by Jumoke Akinjide, daughter of a former attorney general of the federation, Richard Akinjide. She however won while the Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, who represents the district, was in detention for alleged murder.
